Jordan (Eben D.) is born in Danville, Maine.

October 13, 1822

Eben Jordan arrives in Boston in approximately 1836, finds work initially on a farm in West Roxbury, and then in a downtown dry goods store. He opens his own store in 1842,* and goes into partnership in another store with Charles Marsh in 1851.* Jordan marries Julia Clark in 1847 and the family moves to 46 Beacon Street in 1866.* He goes on to become a philanthropist, the builder of two of Boston’s most important music venues, and a founder of the Boston Globe. He dies at his home at 46 Beacon Street on November 15, 1895 and is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery.
